Underwater archaeology has made tremendous strides in the last 30 to 40 years, becoming one of the more significant and, let it be admitted, one of the more attractive branches of historical research. Exploring the wrecks of old ships has brought to light countless artefacts, each one with its own material and historical value; in a broader perspective, it has brought us into contact with an extensive range of the products of the material culture of many nations. The objects recovered from wrecks are historically more valuable and in a better state of preservation than many artefacts recovered from sites on dry land; moreover, the dating of such objects is often more precise. The first stage in the exploration of the wreck of General Carleton, a British ship sunk in 1785 and discovered off the Polish shores in 1989, yielded over 770 artefacts, which were sent on a regular basis to the Museum's Conservation Department. This was where these objects were conserved and where the second stage of research began. Apart from examining the artefacts themselves, the conservators analysed the efficacy of the methods they applied; further, they restored damaged objects, especially the unique items of clothing worn by sailors in the second half of the 18th century. These sets of clothing turned out to be a revelation: museums around the world are in possession of very few items of clothing worn at sea by ordinary seamen during that time... General Carleton, which has been dubbed "The Yorkshire Mary Rose", was a ship of about 390 tons, built at Whitby in 1777, probably by Thomas Fishburn who was the builder of Earl of Pembroke (later James Cook's bark Endeavour). She was owned by Nathaniel Campion, and Thomas Pyman was the Master. In the early years, General Carleton was involved in the Baltic Trade, bringing timber and pine tar to Hull, and later to Portsmouth.
