"The seventh art has surrounded us since our youth and it continues to marvel us with its accurate unreality, with images that absorb us until we forget that we are sitting in an armchair in front of a two-dimensional screen where the film projects frame after frame. In the presence of this magic, the mind or the heart resolves to become part of the story, to identify with the characters, to hate, to love and to fear in a dark movie theatre. Before the advent of computers, posters glued to the walls or on the doors of movie theaters were made by hand -on paper, cloth or poster board- by various anonymous artists around the country. I suppose that some of those movie posters followed the model indicated by the bookpress of the cinematographic producers, but I also think that the creativity of our poster makers gave way to new works of art created to attract viewers, and if the posters become a part of the publicity, they also become a part of art. It is the art of the poster (the colors, the composition, the typography, the message, the symbols) which instantaneously transmit to us the essence of the movie, its unforgettable gleam. Inexplicable, even now, is the anonymity of a large number of film poster authors. It is this lack of information which Michael Dillon seeks to resolve with the support of the Cinemateca Nacional (Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana), even though it was almost impossible to figure out the names of all of the Ecuadorian poster makers. Without a doubt, Ecuadorian cinema posters warrant a book and investigation that captures this creative memory to return it again to the Ecuadorian public. This reminds us that the poster artists have performed an arduous and beautiful job along side the country's best directors of cinema."
