Glenda O'Bannion is the narrator of her own story. She hasn't ever dared to have hopes and dreams for the future, being pretty sure that sort of thing is only true for characters in books -- and maybe people in Hollywood or New York City; certainly nothing special was ever going to be in the cards for an 18 year old teen-ager from an abusive family in another small town near Minneapolis, Minnesota. Then, like the cavalry, Charles O'Bannion, a handsome pilot for the Army and a spittin' image of every hero she'd loved in books, came into town and changed everything for her, including her last name and address. She gladly, if cautiously, falls into the embrace of a new marriage and his hometown, Popcorn, Indiana. For her, becoming the 65th resident of that town provides her the opportunity to blossom like a rose too long in the bud. But, unfortunately, her rose garden will not be free of thorns.
